The Overland Track, Tasmania

December 1999, Camping and Trekking, 7 days

This trip was the most challenging trip I've ever taken yet. It was a lone trek for seven days that covers around 100km.

Despite starting alone, I met interesting people along the way. Twice I walk with a German. Then I walk with a Yankee and a Swedish couple. There had been doubts at the beginning whether I had had considered all the possibilities and the worst that might happen. But at the end I'm glad I have made it through the 7 days (thank God!). With a little experience at trekking and camping over 4 days in the wild, it was quite an achievement to complete this trek.

At the start I was based in Launcheston. Overland Track starts from Waldheim in the North to Lake St. Clair in the South. The walk took a major side trek to Pine Valley for the amazing Labyrinth and Mt Acropolis.

The highlights of the trip are climbing Cradle Mountain, near hypothermic at the Old Pelion Hut (forced to take an extra day rest in the hut), the sacred wind and mist at the Labyrinth, and ascending 89 degree up Mt. Acropolis.
